Treatment For Yeast Infection

Treatment for yeast infection conditions is important because the symptoms can be very unpleasant and the infection can get worse if not treated.

Yeast infections can effect many people at different ages including babies, women, men and the elderly. The most common types of yeast infection are vaginal yeast infection, thrush, diaper rash, skin and nail bed infections but vaginal yeast infections are a particular problem for women.

Yeast infections are caused by a fungus called Candida Albicans that naturally occurs in the body along with other bacteria. A healthy body has a balance between yeast and the other bacteria which keep the yeast population under control. When something disrupts this balance, an overgrowth of Candida, or yeast infection, can occur.

Yeast infections are not life threatening in healthy people and are highly treatable.  There are many treatment options available and no reason anyone should suffer from a yeast infection without treating it.

There are various treatments for yeast infections.

When you first notice yeast infection symptoms, you should consult with your doctor and be tested to be sure it is a yeast infection. For women who get frequent yeast infections, some home tests are available too.

Once you are sure you have a yeast infection, you can use prescription medication from your doctor, but there are also many over the counter medications as well. For pregnant women it’s best to consult a physician for a remedy.

Vaginal yeast infections are easily treated with over the counter antifungal creams like Miconazole, Tioconazole, Butoconazole, or Clotrimazole which should be applied to the infected area for one to seven days.

To prevent vaginal yeast infection from occurring, avoid using douches, feminine sprays, scented toilet paper and deodorant tampons.  It is also best to wear cotton underwear and avoid wearing tight pants or panty hoses.  When wearing a wet suit or a bathing suit, it is recommended to change out of it right away.

Treating Thrush or Oral Yeast Infection

A yeast infection of the mouth is often called thrush and can be treated with medicated mouthwashes or lozenges that dissolve in the mouth.  These can be prescribed by your doctor.

The best prevention for thrush is maintaining good oral hygiene and for those using dentures, clean them thoroughly before using.  For breastfeeding mothers, it’s best to have a breast check up if you suspect a yeast infection that could be passed on to a breastfeeding baby.

Treating Diaper Rashes

Diaper rashes caused by a yeast infection can be treated with over the counter antifungal creams and/or through supplements like acidophilus.

Protecting infants or adults from diaper rashes means keeping the area under the diaper clean and as dry as possible.  It also helps to allow the skin to breathe by not using a diaper for at least an hour a day.  It's a good idea to use cotton diapers more often than the disposable ones since cotton allows the skin to breathe more easily.

Treating Nail Bed Infections

Yeast infections of the toenail bed are very difficult to treat because the yeast live under the nail and it's difficult to reach with medication.  A prescription for an antifungal pill is often prescribed but needs to be used with caution as it cn be dangerous to the liver. Topical treatments can be used and the nails can be soaked in vinegar and other solutions daily until the nail has completely grown out and eliminated the yeast underneath.

Homeopathic Remdies:

Homeopathic treatment is based on "homeopathy" an alternative medical treatment founded by German physician Samuel Hahnemann in 1796. It is based on the principle of "like cures like" and the remeides prescribed are based on your symptoms. Homeopathic remedies are believed to help the body's defenses fight whatever disease or illness the body is suffering from.

Some common homeopathic yeast infection treatments are calcarea carbonica to help with the itching and burning sensations common around menstruation. Kali bichromicum is often prescribed for the vaginal discharge and itching and burning from vaginal yeast infections. There are many other homeopathic remedies used in the treatment of yeast infections and it is a good idea to consult with a homeopathic practitioner if you would like to try this treatmetn for yeast infection.

Natural Remedies using products in your own kitchen can also provide relief from yeast infection symptoms. Some home remedies for yeast infections are enough to treat mild yeast infections, and can be used with medication for more severe or chronic yeast infections.
